La, Bang, swoosh, ting!
Welcome to Break Out Voices
Break Out Voices is a choir with a difference. Based in Windmill Hill, Bristol, UK we are more of a 'vocal band' than a choir, singing an ‘a cappella’ repertoire of popular music arranged by choir leader Kate Fletcher. With a high-energy performance style, which often incorporates movement, body-percussion and even home-made instruments, Break Out Voices combines theatrical elements with vocals to create exciting, highly entertaining performances for both singers and audiences.
I Love Singing! Can I Join?
Break Out Voices is founded on the ethos that everyone should have the opportunity to sing and have fun with music regardless of ability or experience. We are a friendly, welcoming group and are open to all over 18s.
All you need to be able to do is hold a tune - you certainly don’t need to be able to sing brilliantly. There is no audition and you won't be put on the spot (unless you would really welcome a chance to shine!)
You do not even need to be able to read music - songs will be learned by ear but with sheet music and lyric sheets available for those who would like it. We will record all the parts for people to practice at home and bringing your own smartphone or recording device to use in rehearsal is encouraged.
If you’d like to join, get in touch via the contact page and we’ll invite you along for a free taster session.
All that we ask is that you come with an open mind and a healthy dose of enthusiasm. Again, if you’d like to give it a try, get in touch via the contact page for your free taster session.
I Love Being on Stage! Do we get the Chance to Perform?
The choir performs regularly throughout the year and members need to have a certain level of commitment towards these events. Break Out Voices aims to look as well as sound exciting and unique and we’ll need people to bring their personality to the performance – this is your chance to really go for it!
I’m a bit Nervous. Do we really have to Perform?
Kate's belief is that performing – and the confidence boost that comes with it - should be for everyone. Being part of a group gives you safety in numbers and you won’t be picked out for any solo roles unless you want to be. The more you do it, the better you get at it and you’ll soon find that standing in front of big groups is no longer a worry for you – a great skill for everyday life as well as in the choir. Together we’ll work on ways to break down those nerves and feel happy and confident on stage.
No i really get anxious about performing…
You’re in luck! Kate has recently launched a new choir aimed squarely at wellbeing without the pressure to learn pieces or perform. Please check out the Songs for the Soul tab for more info.
Is there a Social Aspect?
Of course. Break Out Voices is a chance to get to know other like-minded people from South Bristol and beyond. Heading to the pub after practice is encouraged. We hold regular social events and even an ‘away weekend’ in the autumn which is extremely good fun. Plus there’s nothing like putting on a performance as a true ‘team building’ exercise. Come join the fun!
I’M ON A LOW INCOME. CAN I AFFORD IT?
We wish to make the joy of singing accessible to all and for this reason have a three-tier payment scheme. If you consider yourself to be on a low income there are two new price bands available: half price or totally free if paying is a significant barrier to joining.
